Families: The Reason Why We Never Really ‘Grow Up’

When I was a little girl, I thought that grown ups were these mature people that always had the answers and wore sensible clothes. I thought that growing up was just another milestone similar to high school graduation. Now that I am of the age of someone who could be considered ‘grown up’ I am still wondering when my time will come to actually feel this way.

I’ve come to realize that there are a number of reasons why we never really feel grown up, but the main reason is because of our families. Love’em or hate’em, families have the strange ability to turn back time and make you feel like a kid again. That time you wet the bed when you had a sleep-over? Your cousin will never let you forget it. That embarrassing baby picture of you with poopy pants? It’s on display and framed for everyone’s viewing pleasure.

Seeing a Version of My Younger, Funner Self

While vacationing in San Francisco recently, my husband and I spent a relaxing afternoon walking along a quiet beach and exploring a cave. While we enjoyed our little picnic, we noticed three giddy teenage girls giggling, running around, and splashing in the water—seemingly without a care in the world. We envied their youthfulness, their energy, and their care-free attitudes. In comparison, we felt…old.

Staying Young at Heart

Have you ever met someone who could be described as simply old? I don’t mean literally old because I know one particularly wild, mountain-climbing, sky-diving, motorcycle-riding seventy year old. By old I mean someone who acts old, like they’ve had the zest sucked out of their relatively young body.

This type of oldie is a lot of things, but fun is not one of them. He or she is rather uptight with no sense of humour, bland, and all together as adventurous as apple pie. Everything about the old-before-its-expiry-date person screams “elderly” from their carefully coiffed ‘do to their sensible loafers.

How did a once cute bubbly baby grow up to be such a lame adult? I think a miniscule number of people are actually born “old.” The rest just perhaps have become downtrodden and beaten by life’s disappointments, burdens, and obligations. Let’s face it—paying down a mortgage, raising kids, and perhaps spending your day doing a job you don’t like but pays the bills can take a toll on anybody.

Snake Venom Face Cream for Only $525

While most people try to avoid any contact with snakes, Euoko, a Canadian cosmetic company has taken the venom from the temple viper and created an anti-aging face cream. Women have been flocking to high-end retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Harrods and Barneys to shell out $525 for 30 ml of face cream.

The Y-30 Intense Lift Concentrate cream contains a synthetic form of Waglerin 1, which is a powerful anti-aging peptide found in the snake venom. The face cream is designed to work like Botox by freezing muscles to prevent fine lines, but markets itself as the “painless and convenient” version as it doesn’t involve the hassle of injections.

As a twentysomething female, I can’t say that fighting wrinkles is my top priority right now. I am also in no position to bash the women who are snapping up this face cream with bite; after all, maybe in a few years, I may feel the need or desire to have youthful-looking skin at any cost. But that’s just it—the cost.
