Preparing for Change

Just when you settle into a comfortable schedule, Change has to come and stir the pot. At least that’s how I feel about a lot of changes in life. The next big change on my horizon is the arrival of my second baby in just a few short weeks. While change is inevitable and brings

My Lil’ Monchhichi

My husband recently bought me a Monchhichi doll which brought back visions of Care Bears, Smurfs and Rainbow Brite. As a child of the 80s I always thought these little monkey dolls were super-cute, but never owned one. Now as a so-called “grown-up” I am a proud owner of a mini Monchhichi disguised as a panda!

Do We Ever Really ‘Have it Together’?

When you’re little, you expect certain milestones or accomplishments to happen to you in life by a certain age: home ownership in your twenties, a good career by the time you’re 30, married with kids before 35, amongst other things. But when one or more of these expectations don’t fall into place by some arbitrary

Please Don’t Judge Me By My Screaming Toddler

I used to cringe and get annoyed at babies, toddlers and pretty much all children in general who made a loud fuss in public. It’s safe to say that I was not a “kid” person. That was before I became a mom. Now when I see little people who are acting out and making a scene, I feel sorry for the parents. I give them empathetic looks to convey the message, “I feel your pain and I’m not judging you.”

Toddlers especially are unpredictable little bundles of energy. Last week I went out to dinner at a somewhat fancy Vietnamese restaurant with my parents, husband, and 17 month old daughter. I almost dread going to sit-down dinners with Ayla now because she can sit still for about 30 minutes max before she gets ants in her pants and demands to be released from her high chair.

Now the real “fun” begins.

4 Types of Facebook Friends that Make Me Cringe

The newsfeed in Facebook is both a blessing and a curse because: a) it allows you to keep tabs on your nearest and dearest friends and acquaintances; and b) it allows you to keep tabs on your nearest and dearest friends and acquaintances. For people who actually have funny, touching or interesting status updates, the newsfeed is great. And for all others who fall under one, or more than one (*cringe*) of the following categories, I curse you…

The Constant Status Updater
If you regularly update your Facebook status multiple times a day, it’s time to use Twitter. Nobody cares if you missed the bus, had a bagel for lunch, and are currently watching American Idol. The worst offenders are often parents who document every single burp, hiccup, and nap of their beloved offspring as if it were the most glorious thing. I’m a mother myself and even I don’t want to recount every mundane detail of my baby’s day.

Spouses Day

The people who mean the most to us are often taken for granted. A little known holiday is Spouses Day which takes place today. My post on HealthyPlace.com talks about Spouses Day and a few ideas on how to make the day special for our LuvBuvs. Here is an excerpt:

According to Hallmark and

My Little Security Guards

Who needs a security system when you have two pairs of watchful and very curious eyes faithfully guarding your front door?

Recently Ayla has discovered that there is a window of discovery to the outside world by simply lifting the blinds on our front door. Every time my husband is shoveling snow (which has been much too frequently lately), she takes her post at the front door and presses her chubby little face to the glass while squealing, “Oooh!”

Tips for a Healthier and Happier You

Once the excitement of the holidays is over and we feel the effects of our spend-happy and overindulgent ways, it’s official – the January “blahs” are here. While I try not to make resolutions that I know I can’t keep, I think now is a good time to re-energize and improve our lifestyle habits. Maybe

The Beauty of Driving an Old Clunker

Some people spend their money on fancy cars, designer clothing, and the latest gadgets. My husband and I prefer to spend our money on travelling. This is evident in one of our cars: a black ’98 Chevrolet Cavalier. Others see this as a “lemon” while we see this as one tough cookie as it’s still reliable and has weathered its way through many a winter storm. My husband bought this car more than a decade ago with cold, hard cash that he saved up and hasn’t looked back since he sped out of the car lot.

Some friends and family are flabbergasted that we haven’t “upgraded” our car. People will think you’re poor, they tell us. While we have the means to drive a nicer car, we just don’t want to. Why? We both believe in living frugally and not throwing things out until they’re broken. The money we would get if we sold the car would be around $1000; but since the car is still in great condition, we figure we could get a few more years out of it which is definitely cost-effective in our books. And besides, anyone who judges us by the car we drive is probably not someone we’d like very much anyway.

But the biggest reason why we don’t buy a nicer car is probably because we don’t value vehicles very much. We both are of the mind that a vehicle is meant to transport you from one place to another safely. Period. Everything else is just a “nice to have.”

Creepy and Realistic Masks from SPFX

A twenty-something Chinese man from Hong Kong made headlines in October 2010 when he donned a mask which made him look like an elderly Caucasian man to sneak into Canada. The fact that a simple mask and disguise were enough to fool airport authorities seemed baffling at first, but new reports say he had help as eight people have been arrested, including one airport employee and two former employees. Still, that scene from Mission Impossible where Tom Cruise peels off a mask to show his true identity seems not too far away.

SPFX Masks, the company that produces the silicone mask to make his transatlantic trip makes a bunch of seriously creepy and realistic masks. Deception doesn’t come cheap – the masks range in price from approximately USD $500 to over $1000 depending on if you want eyebrows and hair included. SPFX’s handcrafted masks apparently “behave like real flesh and muscle” and are used by serious haunted house professionals (and those looking to sneak into different countries).
