Before I had my second baby Charlie, a super-kind and smart co-worker gave a present to my daughter Ayla (18 months at the time), the big-sister-to-be. The Snuggle Pods Snuggle Bug turned out to be just the thing to get Ayla used to the idea of a new baby in the house.

Today, February 14th, is the day when we’re supposed to shower our loved ones with gifts, affection, and attention. While I loathe how this sweet day has become an excuse for florists to jack up the cost of wilted roses and chocolate shops to inflate both their prices and the size of our bellies, it’s hard to hate a holiday about love. Especially a holiday dressed in red, pink, white and sprinkled with hearts.
I miss the old days when we used to make Valentine mailboxes out of construction paper and exchange Valentine’s with our classmates. Those were simpler times when we eagerly waited to see if our crush gave us a “good” Valentine or not.

My husband recently bought me a Monchhichi doll which brought back visions of Care Bears, Smurfs and Rainbow Brite. As a child of the 80s I always thought these little monkey dolls were super-cute, but never owned one. Now as a so-called “grown-up” I am a proud owner of a mini Monchhichi disguised as a panda!

As a seven month pregnant beach ball, it’s no surprise that I have baby on the brain these days. I feel a bit guilty as I haven’t really been focusing as much on this second baby as I did during my first pregnancy – mainly because my toddler and work are soaking up all my attention. But it just hit me recently that the new baby is going to be here soon…really soon!
So, to make it up to Baby #2, I’ve been devoting my spare time to making a cozy little nest for him. I found these adorable wall decals by Wee Gallery. These decals are designed by husband and wife team, Dave and Surya, who have taken into consideration a newborn infant’s development. As parents they found out that most newborns are only able to see 12 to 15 inches away and are drawn to high contract black and white images. The adorable animal graphics were tested out on their own children who were continually drawn back to them.
I love this Jungle Wall theme:

Lately, gratitude has been on my brain. This is partly due to the holiday season and all its sentimental mushiness, plus the discovery of some horrible news about a little girl I know with a brain tumour which put things in perspective, and maybe just because I am an all-around sap.
It was very fitting then, when I received a Gratitude Journal for Christmas from my husband’s step-mom (which I guess would make her my step-mom-in-law?).

With more and more people having multi-cultural backgrounds, it’s nice to see some fun t-shirts that celebrate diversity. Swirl Syndicate was founded by Leigh-Ann Jackson, a mother who experienced the genuine confusion that comes from strangers when out with your baby who doesn’t exactly look like you. Swirl’s “collection of tongue-in-cheek tees is meant to

I consider myself a fairly jaded consumer and like most people, have become adept at cutting out the noise from the daily onslaught of advertisements screaming to get our attention. But this particular billboard cut through the clutter and made me gawk. And drool a bit, I might add.

A good friend of mine recently told me that she keeps a couple’s diary with her husband. This friend married her high school sweetheart and they are one of the closest, mushiest couples I know—after all these years he still buys her flowers for no reason and writes poems for her. So when she told me they started keeping a diary on their anniversary, I thought I was lucky to be privy to one of the little ways they keep the romance alive and strengthen the bond in their relationship.

A couple of months ago I was browsing through a book sale selling proofs and stumbled upon Impossible Motherhood: Testimony of an Abortion Addict by Irene Vilar. As my busy-body 12 month old would have it, I just finished reading this book last night. I’ve heard of a lot of different addictions, but an abortion addict is something that’s never crossed my existence.
I began reading this book and was fascinated and a little bit horrified about the prospect of reading about the type of woman who could have “fifteen abortions in fifteen years.” My critical side instantly thought, “Wouldn’t you have learned to be more careful after the first or second abortion?”
