Zombie Ants March to the Beat of Killer Fungi

Deep in Brazil’s Atlantic rainforest, there grows a type of parasitic fungus, Ophiocordyceps camponoti-balzani, which when rooted in an ant, can take over the insect’s brain and destroy it once the victim reaches an ideal growing place for the killer fungi.

A Beautiful Flower With A Repugnant Smell

Most flowers have a pleasant fragrance. But I suppose this particular flower, with its umbrella-sized petals might suggest that it’s not like other flowers.

The Amorphophallus titanium, also known as the corpse flower because of the strong, nasty odour it emits when in bloom, is a large rainforest plant that has been growing in a greenhouse

Creepy and Realistic Masks from SPFX

A twenty-something Chinese man from Hong Kong made headlines in October 2010 when he donned a mask which made him look like an elderly Caucasian man to sneak into Canada. The fact that a simple mask and disguise were enough to fool airport authorities seemed baffling at first, but new reports say he had help as eight people have been arrested, including one airport employee and two former employees. Still, that scene from Mission Impossible where Tom Cruise peels off a mask to show his true identity seems not too far away.

SPFX Masks, the company that produces the silicone mask to make his transatlantic trip makes a bunch of seriously creepy and realistic masks. Deception doesn’t come cheap – the masks range in price from approximately USD $500 to over $1000 depending on if you want eyebrows and hair included. SPFX’s handcrafted masks apparently “behave like real flesh and muscle” and are used by serious haunted house professionals (and those looking to sneak into different countries).

Disappearing Without a Trace with Frank Ahearn

This whole WikiLeaks spectacle has piqued my interest about the man behind it all, Julian Assange. Until his recent arrest, the WikiLeaks founder was living life on the move and was pretty darn good at hiding himself. This whole notion of hiding from the world and disappearing without a trace seems like something out of a movie which got me wondering what exactly it takes to erase your footprint in real life.

I remember reading an article a few months ago in Reader’s Digest about a privacy expert, Frank Ahearn, who helps people hide and start new lives for a living. His relocation expertise has been highlighted on CNN, BBC World News and a number of print publications. His clients seeking a new life vary from business tycoons, medics, real estate professionals, to men and women desperate to escape a troubled domestic life.

His experience working as a ‘skip tracer’ (someone who helps the authorities and private investigators find people who have ‘skipped town’) is now invaluable as he works on the other end – hiding people. Ahearn found Monica Lewinsky when she was hiding from the media by pretending to be a UPS delivery man.

Grow a Mo for Movember

If you’ve been seeing a lot of handle-bar moustaches lately, don’t worry, you’re not going crazy. November is the month when dudes can ditch their shavers for 30 days and grow a crazy mo—all in the name of prostate cancer, the leading cancer that affects men.

RIP Walkman – Sony Finally Stops Production of its Iconic Cassette Player

After 31 years, Sony has decided to pull the plug on production of the Walkman in Japan, the cassette player that revolutionized how we listen to music. Prior to the creation of this portable music device, music fans had no other choice but to lug around clunky radios for music-on-the-go.

However, die-hard fans can rest assured that Walkmans will continue to be manufactured in China and distributed to parts of the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.

Save the Tigers

A new statement issued by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) says that the tiger could become extinct in 12 years if current poaching practices keep their course. WWF spokeswoman Marie von Zeipel estimates that there are only 3,200 tigers left in the wild.

A Last Meal at the Heart Attack Grill

If you feel bad about cheating on your diet with that little bag of chips, you can comfort yourself knowing that at least you didn’t dine at the Heart Attack Grill.

Since 2005, Heart Attack Grill has been serving its infamous double bypass burgers and flatliner fries in its Chandler, Arizona restaurant. Nothing about the fast-food joint is quiet or subdued from its sexy nurse uniforms worn by the servers to its unabashedly calorific menu. Its unique concept has sprung copy-cat restaurants. Recently HAG sued a similar outfit, Heart Stoppers Sports Grill in Florida.
