Yesterday we celebrated my husband’s grandma’s birthday together. His grandparents are snowbirds who spend half the year RV’ing across the U.S. They recently returned from their yearly trip and picked up some adorable little moccasins for Ayla.
What’s funny is that Josh has been asking for a pair of moccasins forever, just like his grandpa’s, but instead our baby got some before him. It shows how we as parents are like chopped liver as soon as a baby comes along.
When visiting my own parents, they barely acknowledge me. Instead they squeal, “The BABY is here!! Oh, hi Theresa.”
Looking at these baby shoes also reinforces how quickly my daughter is growing up. These moccasins already dwarf her newborn slippers. It’s a cliché, but now I realize what people mean when they tell you to cherish every moment with your little one because it goes by faster than you know it.
In the words of Robert Munsch from his book Love You Forever:
I’ll love you forever,
I’ll like you for always,
As long as I’m living
My baby you’ll be.
I read this classic to Ayla shortly after she was born and by the end of it I was bawling my eyes out. I blame it on the pregnancy hormones. I am not turning into a sappy mom. Pregnancy hormones, I say.
