Since the spring weather has been so nice lately, I’ve been taking a lot more walks around my neighbourhood. Aside from enjoying the fresh air and budding trees, I’ve been enjoying all of the pretty wreaths hanging from people’s doors. I started getting WREATH ENVY.
Ever since I was a little girl, I always pictured my home to have a porch swing, a window seat and a welcoming wreath. While I don’t have a window seat, I do have a porch (but no swing-yet), and I was determined to get my wreath, dammit! I previously purchased an autumn/winter wreath but couldn’t find a spring/summer wreath that suited my fancy. So I decided to make my dream wreath.
For inspiration, I was thinking of lush woodland with birds and butterflies. My goal was to make an organic-looking wreath on a budget; most store-bought wreaths retail for around $20 so I wanted to keep the cost well below this. The total cost of the project is around $10: the grapevine wreath was $4 from a craft store and all the flowers and decorations were purchased from a dollar store.
Materials:
- Grapevine wreath.
- Whimsical decorations such as birds and butterflies (I wanted to add fairies and other cute critters but wasn’t able to find any within budget).
- Assorted cloth flowers and vine(s)/foliage.
- Some old twist ties with the wires removed to attach the vine.
- An old rope to hang the wreath (the rattier the better for a rustic look).
- Hot glue gun.
Directions:
Step 1: Attach the rope to the top of the wreath. Using the twist tie wires, attach a vine to the perimeter of the wreath. For a lusher look, attach as many vines as you desire. I wanted some of the grapevine branches to peek through the flowers so only used one vine.
Step 2: Remove all of the flowers and leaves from the plastic stems.
Step 3: Have fun arranging the flowers the way you like and then use generous globs of glue to attach them to the wreath.
Tip: For an organic look, avoid having any pre-arranged colour or flower pattern.
Step 4: Add the finishing decorations and you’re done!
I guess the only thing “whimsical” about my wreath is the silver-winged bird. Ah well, at least it adds a splash of colour to my door, and I finally got my long-awaited wreath.
