Fresh Takes on 5 Classic Foods

Almost every fridge contains the ubiquitous jar of pickles, always available on stand-by while patiently soaking in its trademark sour juice. Most people only associate the jarred cucumber as a topping, but now it is available as a frozen treat.

Check out how five common foods found in your fridge or cupboards have been reinvented.

Bob’s Pickle Pops

Similar to freezies, these pickled treats are being marketed as a healthy alternative to your sugar packed frozen pops. No additives are included in this snack. Each pickle is pressed to extract the juice and flavour and then frozen. With only 3 calories and less than 1 gram of sugar per 2 oz. serving, there is no harm in indulging in this pickled delight.  A few new flavours include jalapeno and cactus.

Japanese-Inspired Kit Kat

“Gimme a break, gimme a break, break me off a piece of that soy-flavoured Kit Kat bar…”

The popular chocolate-covered wafer snack has been modified to cater to the tastes of the Japanese market. Since Nestle has expanded its repertoire to include 19 new flavours to appeal to different regions within Japan including soy sauce, wasabi with white chocolate, sweet potato and baked corn.

The Japanese are smitten by these flavours making Nestle the top selling brand in the country. Sorry folks, if you have a hankering to try an “exotic” Kit Kat bar, you’ll have to go to Japan.

Japa Dogs

An American classic has turned Japanese. Japa Dog in Vancouver offers more than just your ordinary hot dog. During the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, visitors lined up at the popular hot dog stand for an hour to try specialty dogs such as the Okonomi pork dog with bonito flakes, fried cabbage and Japanese mayo. There are a variety of other flavours including Edamame, Veggie Terimayo, and Kobe Beef.

Crispy Cones

No longer just for ice cream, these Crispy Cones hold just about any food you can dream of. These nutritious cones are made of quality, all natural ingredients and are catered to busy bees on the run. They provide a mess-free snack or meal (depending on the size of the cone).

A variety of fillings are available including teriyaki chicken, cheese cake, pepperoni pizza, and carmelized apple. Driving to work while eating breakfast has now gotten a whole lot easier.

Gummi Bear Flavoured Tea

Typically candies enjoyed by itself, the creative tea connoisseurs at TeaGschwendner have created a gummi bear flavoured tea. Great for kids or those who are young at heart, this sweet tea blend features actual gummi bears, apple, hibiscus blossoms, rose hips, lemon grass, lemon and orange peel, and sunflower blossoms.
