10 Ways You Burn Calories without Realizing It

If you are anything like me, squeezing in a trip to the gym is difficult. I often feel guilty about not exercising enough. By the end of the day after working, caring for my baby, cooking, doing household chores, and running errands I’m exhausted.

Well, we might actually be burning more calories during the day doing normal activities than we think!

I found a nifty little exercise and activity calculator from ProHealth which tabulates the number of calories burned doing various activities and exercises. Here are ten common household activities along with the number of calories burned if you were to do the activity for one hour.

Eco-Friendly Nail Polish

Last week I took some “me” time while my husband took care of the baby and I had the rare treat of getting a pedicure. The esthetician introduced me to SpaRitual, a beauty line which features eco-friendly products. Its vegan nail lacquers are touted as DBP, formaldehyde and toluene-free.

I don’t know about you, but I noticed that my nails would sometimes turn yellow after repeated use of certain nail polishes. Formaldehyde is one of the contributors to yellow nails. While I know all nail polishes contain chemicals, I’m glad to find one sans all the nastiest offenders.

Finding Little Moments of Happiness

Lately I have been feeling blah. Trying to balance my family, work, and social obligations has been taking a toll. A big part of it is because I’ve been so tired—and it’s my own fault. My 8 month old daughter has been sleeping from 10 pm to 7 am for the past two months. For many sleep-deprived parents, this probably sounds like a dream. But instead of taking advantage of this time to rest, I stay up until 2 am doing all the things I can’t fit in during the day.

So I start the day feeling run-down and cranky. My typical morning thoughts go something like this: I can’t wait until I don’t have to change diapers anymore. I wish I had more time to myself. I wish I wish I wish…poor me…blah blah blah.

After a little while I got sick of feeling sorry for myself. I needed a splash of cold water to the soul to wash away my “poor me” blues and kick start my happiness. We all get caught up in our personal cobwebs from time to time and need a good shake to get back on track.

One Mom’s Quest to Burst the Sterile Bubble

Somewhere along the way I’ve come to dread and perhaps fear the five-letter word: GERMS. While I am not the tidiest person (my messy home is a testament to this), I noticed that in the past few years hand-sanitizer has become part of my daily regime. When using public restrooms I am the person grabbing a paper towel to avoid touching the door handles.

Maybe it’s the media’s coverage of the recent H1N1 breakout, or the avian flu of years past that has made me afraid of germs. Or maybe I’m just getting soft and paranoid as a parent.

Fresh Takes on 5 Classic Foods

Almost every fridge contains the ubiquitous jar of pickles, always available on stand-by while patiently soaking in its trademark sour juice. Most people only associate the jarred cucumber as a topping, but now it is available as a frozen treat.

Check out how five common foods found in your fridge or cupboards have been reinvented.

Man of the Year

Call it what you will, but I was brought up in a household where men were expected to help out, especially with heavy lifting. While I’m sure there are plenty of strong women out there, I think it’s just common courtesy to help someone (particularly women and the elderly) with a physically-challenging task.

What I saw in the grocery store yesterday made me believe that chivalry is dead.

10 Green Practices that Benefit You and the Environment

Being more “green” doesn’t have to be difficult. In fact, many green practices are good for you and your wallet. Here are ten relatively painless ways to be more environmentally-friendly.

Homemade with Heart

As I was organizing my daughter’s room the other day (her closet is crammed already – how did a baby acquire so much stuff in a few months?) I came across the overwhelming pile of gifts that people sent when she was born. While I’m thankful for every single gift, the homemade ones are the ones I will remember the most.

Watch Out for Those Killer Tomatoes

The red fruit found in your salad may have a dark side. According to a study in the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, some types of tomatoes have displayed carnivorous tendencies.

Being 1/2 of an Interracial Couple

As an Asian woman married to a Caucasian man, people often assume that I don’t pay attention to race, or that race isn’t a big deal to me. Not true. While I consider myself to be an open-minded person, I find now that as one half of an interracial couple, I pay more attention to race than ever before. That is, I tend to notice other interracial couples.

When out in public with my husband, we even have a game we play called Spot the Inters (with “inter” being an interracial couple). In Canada, mixed race couples are a dime a dozen nowadays, with a large proportion of these couples being Asian/Caucasian. Within my own family, there are already four family members who have a spouse of another race.

So with the number of interracial couples on the rise, is there still discrimination?
