I recently took a two week vacation with Charlie who was one month at the time, and Ayla at the very trying age of 19 months. Along for the ride was my husband, and my two parents who fulfilled their roles as doting grandparents. Our destination? Hawaii. Namely the Big Island and Maui. Although the mere mention of Hawaii conjures up images of a tropical paradise, our vacation was anything but.
Was our vacation horrible? No, but it definitely was not paradise. Let’s just say that on the long flight from our wintry home in Canada, a very kind stewardess slipped my husband a complimentary bottle of vodka to go with his orange juice. She said, “Here, I think you’ll need this.” Boy, did he ever.

Deep in Brazil’s Atlantic rainforest, there grows a type of parasitic fungus, Ophiocordyceps camponoti-balzani, which when rooted in an ant, can take over the insect’s brain and destroy it once the victim reaches an ideal growing place for the killer fungi.

Most flowers have a pleasant fragrance. But I suppose this particular flower, with its umbrella-sized petals might suggest that it’s not like other flowers.
The Amorphophallus titanium, also known as the corpse flower because of the strong, nasty odour it emits when in bloom, is a large rainforest plant that has been growing in a greenhouse

Before I had my second baby Charlie, a super-kind and smart co-worker gave a present to my daughter Ayla (18 months at the time), the big-sister-to-be. The Snuggle Pods Snuggle Bug turned out to be just the thing to get Ayla used to the idea of a new baby in the house.

A large part of being a mother is about all kinds of sacrifice – but when is enough enough? Sometimes a mom just needs to put herself first for a change – especially when you’re still recovering from the labour and delivery. My post on HealthyPost.com, Mothers Need to Take Care of Themselves First, talks

I’ve been missing in action for the past week because I’ve been busy taking care of my new baby boy, Charlie. Charlie was born on February 24th which makes him exactly 18 months younger than big sister Ayla. Thank goodness for epidurals!

There is one thing that every parent experiences from time to time, and that is competitiveness. If someone says they never feel competitive when it comes to matters of their own children, they are either a liar or a saint. I mean, how can you not compare your little munchkin to others of the same

I used to work with a woman who would always say, “You know someone is cheap when they cut their own hair. Now that is cheap!” I never once chimed in, “Ummm…I guess that would make me cheap.”
Well technically, my husband cuts my hair most of the time. And I prefer to call us frugal because spending $50 or more on just a trim that nobody notices (which is what I want most of the time), seems outlandish to me. I would rather spend the money on a yummy dinner, a new shirt, buying a garden gnome…anything, really.
And my husband is good at cutting my hair and he’s not a hairdresser by trade. I’ve had hairdressers comment on how well my hair was previously cut and praise his handiwork. He is always full of tricks and hidden talents. He’s been cutting his own hair for years, but how he got so skilled at cutting women’s hair is still a mystery to me. He explains that he grew up living with his mom for many years and spending time with her girlfriends. So, I guess he learned this invaluable trade through osmosis and being in an estrogen-filled house?

What’s in a kiss? A lot, apparently. It can make or break a relationship; a horrible first kiss might be grounds for someone to halt a budding romance before it reaches the second date. A kiss can also keep intimacy alive. Smooching, an often overlooked and highly underrated act, is examined in my post on

Today, February 14th, is the day when we’re supposed to shower our loved ones with gifts, affection, and attention. While I loathe how this sweet day has become an excuse for florists to jack up the cost of wilted roses and chocolate shops to inflate both their prices and the size of our bellies, it’s hard to hate a holiday about love. Especially a holiday dressed in red, pink, white and sprinkled with hearts.
I miss the old days when we used to make Valentine mailboxes out of construction paper and exchange Valentine’s with our classmates. Those were simpler times when we eagerly waited to see if our crush gave us a “good” Valentine or not.
